Family behind Charlotte’s Web in Florida responds to the law’s latest challenge

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Another challenge has cropped up in the attempt to bring a non-euphoric strain of medical marijuana to people suffering from chronic seizures. The state approved Charlotte’s Web for use in epileptic patients, including children, last year, but the medicine is still not available as a committee grapples with rules regulating its cultivations, distribution and use. The family behind the law is outraged the drug is still not available to their daughter who suffers from chronic seizures. Holley and Peyton Moseley…

Is the environment screwed in the House allocations? Maybe, but we don’t know yet

in Top Headlines by

Wasn’t the environment supposed to get more money under Amendment 1 — not less? Is this the old Lottery-style switcharoo? Those are obvious questions to be asking after the House issued the general revenue allocation on Friday for the 2015-16 state budget. Agriculture and natural resources spending appeared to be taking a hit — at least compared to last year’s allocation. Last year the allocation was $467.8 million for the agriculture and natural resources and a portion of general government. This year the allocation…

Charlie Cook on Jeb’s national favorability problem

in Top Headlines by

Ah, brothers. Such an embarrassment sometimes. Jimmy Carter had Billy the beer-swilling redneck, Bill Clinton had Roger the cocaine distributor and Lyndon Johnson had Sam Houston, the other beer-swilling redneck. The conventional wisdom is that Jeb Bush will have something of an albatross around his neck owing to his brother’s relatively unpopular tenure in the White House — so then why is he polling less favorably than George W. Bush among Republican primary voters?, asks Charlie Cook in National Journal: While 86 percent of those who identified themselves as Democratic primary voters said…

This news is not surprising for those familiar with the former governor, former Republican, and former Gov. Rick Scott opponent – who also “blew” a 35-point lead against Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate Republican primary in 2010. That loss helped precipitate Crist’s shift from the GOP to an independent, which then led to a move to the Democratic…

After coming off a significant re-election win last November, word is that two-term U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy could announce a bid for the U.S. Senate by the end of the month. The Jupiter Democrat has “emerged as the top pick of Senate Democratic leadership,” reported Marc Caputo in POLITICO on Thursday. Murphy, one of few bright spots for Democrats in 2014, represents Florida’s 18th Congressional District, which covers much of the Treasure Coast. He was re-elected with nearly 60 percent…

Council members mostly OK with Bob Buckhorn decision to hire within TPD for new chief

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Of all the relationships that a big-city mayor has, the one with their police chief is considered paramount. Last summer in St. Petersburg, Rick Kriseman alienated some City Council members who felt they deserved more of an opportunity to weigh in on a replacement for outgoing chief Chuck Harmon. The mayor then surprised everyone by chucking his four finalists and picking Clearwater Police Chief Tony Holloway to lead the SPPD. Now it’s Bob Buckhorn’s turn. Although the recently re-elected mayor…
