Florida economists drawing up new budget forecast

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

State economists are drawing up new forecasts to predict how much the state will collect in taxes. Economists are scheduled to meet on Tuesday. The forecasts will be used by state legislators as they draw up this year’s budget. Late last year economists predicted the state’s main budget account would grow nearly 5 percent during the fiscal year that ends in June. Economists also predicted an additional 4 percent growth in the 2015-16 fiscal year. That growth gave legislators a…

Over the past year, the Florida Department of Corrections has come under fire for inmate deaths, allegations of abuse by prison guards, cover-ups, understaffing and officer shift issues. The report said four former employees confirmed the existence of the policy. DEP and the governor’s office denied…

in Top Headlines by

Marco Rubio looks to be in good shape for his re-election chances for the Senate next year, at least against South Florida Democratic U.S. Reps. Patrick Murphy and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. A Mason-Dixon poll released Tuesday shows Rubio with double-digit leads over both Democrats. Against Murphy, he’s up 50-38 percent. Against Wasserman Schultz, it’s 53-36 percent. But if his presidential aspirations take off, Rubio may very well not run for re-election. If that’s the case, Mason Dixon shows that one…
