With early voting in Jacksonville less than a week away, a new poll out today from UNF’s Public Opinion Research Laboratory finds incumbent Mayor Alvin Brown leading the race with support from 37 percent of voters. Lenny Curry holds 25 percent of the vote, Bill Bishop 11 percent, and Omega Allen 2 percent. The rest of those polled — a quarter of the electorate — are still undecided, just four days before ballots begin to be cast. “Such high levels of uncertainty provide opportunities for each of the candidates to…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.5.15 — Ferguson’s gross legacy

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The question one has to ask after reading just the summary of the Justice Department report on the goings-on with the Ferguson, Missouri, police department is: How many other municipal law enforcement agencies act this way in America? If you want the headline from yesterday to read that Justice concluded that the Ferguson PD violated no federal laws in the death of 18-year-old black youth Michael Brown, well, that was expected. But the depth of anger by black residents that exploded in…

Fine, Jeb, I won’t donate that other $998,000

in Top Headlines by

The check is definitely not in the mail. That’s right, that check for $998,000 to Jeb Bush’s Right to Rise political committee has been ripped up. The money is staying in my bank account. Is this because I was disappointed with Bush’s performance at CPAC? Nope. Do I think someone else, like, say, Scott Walker, is a better choice for president? No, not at all. I canceled that six-figure check a) because I am six figures short of being able to…

Again, craft beer aficionados , be careful what you ask for…

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

On Sunday night, I posted a brief post speculating about the future of craft beer in Florida. I put forth a scenario in which sweeping changes to the law would inspire the mega brewers to buy up smaller ones and open up their own “brew pubs” or “tasting rooms” – or whatever the new law would allow. Cue the Rod Serling music. On Tuesday, Brewbound (a pro-craft beer publication) published…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After sharing this year’s list of Tampa Bay’s 25 most powerful politicians with one political consultant who noted that neither Pasco Tax Collector Mike Fasano or State Representative Dwight were on the list, they said, simply, “That’s insane.” And therein lies the beauty of list making…that some do not make the list. When compiling a list of the 25 most powerful politicians, there is inevitably someone at #26 who probably has a strong argument why they belong instead of someone else. But, just…

Divided Florida Senate panel OKs bill to limit some testing

in Top Headlines by

A measure to put some limits on standardized testing is moving in the Florida Senate after a strong debate. The Senate Education PreK-12 committee approved the bill Wednesday along party lines with Republicans voting yes. If the bill (SB 616) becomes law, it would cap how many hours students could spend on testing. The measure also eliminates some tests, including a test required of 11th grade students. Gov. Rick Scott suspended the test for this year. Some senators said the…

Five minutes with David King, Counsel for League of Women Voters Florida

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Another skirmish in the battle over how Florida’s congressional districts were drawn played out Wednesday at the Florida Supreme Court. Sen. Bill Galvano emerged from the courtroom confident that the justices would uphold a plan approved by a lower court judge. David King represents the League of Women Voters which spearheaded a Fair Districts Constitutional Amendment that the group said lawmakers violated. King told justices that documents provided a peek “behind the curtain” of a corrupted process. Here’s five minutes…
