Today on Context Florida: Blatant hypocrisy, unfair criticism, Gerry Jaski and the SOTS we deserve

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: As a Florida man “of a certain age” with a wife and two daughters, Daniel Tilson is sick and tired of pandering politicians putting so many of our beloved women at risk every year during the state’s 60-day legislative session.  He is fed up with ambitious elected ideologues talking tough about protecting individual liberty and personal freedom – except for that of the women in our lives. Tilson calls that hypocrisy. Blatant hypocrisy, to be more accurate.…

in Top Headlines by

On Friday, the Rick Scott Administration recognized what had been reported weeks earlier: Florida is losing $1.3 billion of federal money that would otherwise go to help hospitals treat poor and uninsured patients. When Eliot Fishman, director of the Children and Adults Health Programs Group in the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services (CMCS) at CMS, told attendees at an Orlando health-care conference in mid-February that the federal government wouldn’t extend Florida’s “Low Income Pool” program, Scott press aide Jackie Schultz…

So he left construction, along with 2.3 million others nationwide during the economic downturn, and got a job installing traffic signals and street lights. “I couldn’t afford to sit at home for a month here and a month there,” said Rager, 53. Now Rager is back in construction, working with a crew on a custom-built home in Orlando, framing walls “and doing a little…

Florence Snyder: In respectful remembrance of Ken Plante

in Top Headlines by

“Revered lobbyist” is usually an oxymoron, but not when applied to Ken Plante, who died last night of Lou Gehrig’s disease. As the tributes pour in, it is hard to believe there was ever a time when Plante was not beloved of government reformers and their cheerleaders on Florida’s editorial boards. But that’s how it was in 1976, when Plante was the lead plaintiff in a court challenge to Florida’s Sunshine Amendment. The amendment had been championed by Gov. Reubin…

Here’s what (I think, maybe) is in Dana Young’s forthcoming gambling bill

in Top Headlines by

There is a wonderful scene in Martin Scorsese’s film “Casino,” in which the character played by Sharon Stone flings racks of betting chips into the air. With Little Richard’s “Slippin’ And Slidin’” blasting in the background, dozens of gamblers scramble across the casino floor attempting to scoop up as much money as possible. All the while, Robert DeNiro looks on in amazement. It really is a helluva piece of filmmaking, but it’s nothing compared to the scene that will take place once…
