in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A $100 million settlement has been reached between three major tobacco companies and hundreds of people who sued them for smoking-related deaths and illnesses in Florida federal court. The tentative agreement announced Wednesday involves R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Philip Morris USA Inc. and Lorillard Tobacco Co. The deal resolves about 400 cases pending before a federal judge in Jacksonville, but does not affect thousands of other lawsuits pending in Florida state courts. “With respect to the cases pending in state…

Joe Biden checks off another 2016 early state in New Hampshire

in Top Headlines by

First, Iowa. Then, South Carolina. Now, New Hampshire. Vice President Joe Biden may have completed his 2016 early voting state trifecta on Wednesday, but there’s still little evidence he’s doing anything else to prepare for a White House bid. “I think there’s some that are wondering if he has any intention, and he really hasn’t said anything about running,” said Steve Shurtleff, the minority leader of the New Hampshire House and a 2008 Biden supporter. Officially in town to receive…

Florence Snyder: Fed up with elite reporters on “Permanent Campaign”

in Top Headlines by

Former governor and probable presidential hopeful Jeb Bush calls them “the 20 people who talk to each other.” You know, the folks who make their living in and around The Permanent Campaign. There’s an Internet site that counts down the days, hours, minutes and seconds from one election to the next. The political press refers to it often, as if it were important. Among the themes: raising wages for workers who have yet to benefit from…

Good luck, Mr. or Ms. Voter, deciding what they’ve got to have — and what they can do without. There are all sorts of things to start the list: leadership, vision, charisma, communication skills, and foreign policy cred. And more: fundraising prowess, authenticity, empathy, a keen understanding of the presidency, and maybe a little familiarity with running for the office. And…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.26.15 – Is GOP divided on whether income inequality is a partisan issue?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

As anyone paying attention to the rhetoric of some of the leading GOP presidential candidates this year, the term “income inequality” is no longer strictly the province of the Occupy Wall Street crowd. “The opportunity gap is the defining issue of our time,” Jeb Bush said in his first major speech of the year in Detroit last month. “More Americans are stuck at their income levels than ever before.” Paul Ryan (not running for president) said that President Obama’s policies have “exacerbated…

Editor’s Note: As the 2015 Legislative Session approaches, FloridaPolitics.com is reporting on several “legislative food fights” likely to break out during the annual lawmaking period. These food fights don’t always make the front page of the Tampa Bay Times, but they are the kind of industry vs. industry or intra-industry turfbattles that drive Tallahassee — and expand the economics for state lobbyists. The first profile focused on an expected scrum between Big Tobacco and trial lawyers, a second story focused on the tax exemption on jet fuel purchases,…
