Former Gov. Charlie Crist and his wife, Carole, have contributed $7,000 to Democratic congressional candidate Patrick Murphy, who is trying to unseat Republican Rep. Allen West in a southeast Florida district, federal election records show.

The Crists have made a series of contributions to Murphy’s campaign, starting in 2011 and continuing this year.

Crist, who left the Republican Party in 2010 and spoke at the recent Democratic National Convention in support of President Obama, also has given $500 this year to Democratic congressional candidate Al Lawson, the records show. Lawson, a former state senator, is trying to defeat incumbent Congressman Steve Southerland in a North Florida district.

Crist also has given $500 this year to former Democratic state Sen. Dave Aronberg, who is running for state attorney in Palm Beach. Also, he has contributed $500 to the merit-retention campaign of Florida Supreme Court Justice R. Fred Lewis. He’s even gotten involved in down-ballot races, endorsing Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch in May and Leon County Superintendent of Schools Jackie Pons in August of 2011.
