St. Petersburg voters are invited to attend – or watch – and learn where candidates stand on issues in the District 1 City Council race during a primary election forum hosted by the League of Women Voters on Tuesday, August 16. The forum will be held in City Hall Council Chamber, 175 Fifth St. N. from 7 to 8 p.m. Hosted by the League of Women Voters, the forum will be televised on the city’s government access channel, StPeteTV, as well as streamed live at www.stpete.org.

Three candidates are vying for the right to contest the District 1 seat in the November general election — Charles W. Gerdes, Robert A. Kersteen and Joshua Ben Shulman. During Tuesday’s primary forum, candidates will answer a series of pre-screened questions submitted by the League of Women Voters members and the audience.  League of Women Voters president Darden Rice will serve as moderator.

A second forum October 18 at City Hall will include all candidates running in City Council Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7.  Council Districts 2 and 8 will not participate in this forum since those seats were filled in 2009.
Both candidate forums will be carried live on StPeteTV (Channel 35 broadcast, 615 Bright House, 15 Knology and 20 Verizon FiOs) as well as streamed live on www.stpete.org.  The forums will be re-broadcast periodically until the August 30 primary and November 8 election.
