CNN poll: Americans know Marco Rubio, but not other VP contenders

According to a CNN/ORC International poll released Thursday, the majority of American voters have no idea who Mitt Romney’s potential running mates are.

Out of all the possible VP running mates mentioned in the survey, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was the only name in the poll known by at least half of the general public.

Among those who had an opinion about Rubio, 28 percent said they held a favorable view of the freshman senator, while 22 percent said they had an unfavorable view. Another 50 percent said they were unsure, with 36 percent of those having never heard of Rubio.

Rubio does well with most demographic groups, although non-whites and voters between the ages of 18 and 49 tend to have a more unfavorable opinion of the senator than favorable.

Other potential contenders polled include Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan.

Rubio, who is busy promoting his new memoir “An American Son,” has remained tight-lipped on the VP selection process.

“I made a decision a couple months ago to not talk about that vice presidential stuff anymore. What I will say is that I am excited about this election year,” Rubio said in Destin earlier this week.

The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International from June 28 to July 1, with 1,517 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s overall sampling error is +/-2.5 percentage points.
