Democrat Amanda Murphy won a special election to the Florida House on Tuesday, claiming the west Pasco seat vacated by popular Republican Mike Fasano, who broke with his party’s leaders to endorse her, reports the Tampa Bay Times.
Here is a compilation of reactions to Murphy’s win:
Former Gov. Charlie Crist:
“Congratulations Amanda Murphy on your election to the Florida House. Was an honor and a pleasure to endorse and support you.”
Senator John Legg, via Twitter:
“Congrats to @VoteAmanda. Looking forward 2 working together for a better Florida. Pasco residents are wonderful & special people”
Senator Wilton Simpson, via Twitter:
“Congratulations to @VoteAmanda for her victory tonight. Pasco County’s needs are bigger than any political party or affiliation”
Speaker Will Weatherford, via Twitter:
“A wise man once told me you don’t brag when you win & you don’t whine when you lose. Congrats to @VoteAmanda”
Speaker Designate Steve Crisafulli:
“Today, the voters of Pasco County have spoken. I congratulate Amanda Murphy for her victory tonight. I also commend Bill Gunter for running a strong race in the face of a relentless negative campaign against him. Amanda Murphy campaigned as an independent voice, so I am hopeful she will reject the special interests to work for common sense solutions to Florida’s challenges.”
Incoming House Democratic Leader Mark Pafford:
“I think that election in Pasco County was really like a litmus test in terms of where Florida is.”
Florida GOP Chairman Lenny Curry:
“The Republican Party of Florida congratulates Bill Gunter on running an honorable campaign that he, his family, his friends and his staff can be proud of. We also congratulate Amanda Murphy on winning the election, and wish her luck as she begins her service in the Florida House.”
