I had to be careful how I framed the headline for this story, so as to avoid another complete meltdown by Jeff Cohen, campaign manager for Connie Mack’s not-so-inevitable-anymore bid for the US Senate.
In response to a blog post — a freakin’ blog post — Cohen decided to pick a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel, responding to a headline that read ‘Mack Campaign: Why We Will Squash LeMieux Like a Bug’ by blasting the Tampa Bay Times.
“(F)or the Tampa Bay Times to write and attribute a snarky, unprofessional statement of this nature to our campaign is patently false and horribly unprofessional,” Cohen wrote in this election cycle’s most bizarre press release. “It’s tabloid journalism at its worst. It is arrogant. It is sophomoric. I would fire anyone who said such a thing.”
First of all, if every reporter who blogged a “snarky” headline were fired, there wouldn’t be anyone left to write for newspapers.
Second of all, and this is my larger point, if your candidate already has a reputation for brash recklessness — a reputation earned for, among other things, grabbing Ron gant’s package during a bar fight, the last thing the campaign should be doing is acting brash and reckless.
In fact, if anyone should be fired, its the campaign manager who just made himself part of the story, rather than navigating his candidate out of an unnecessary mess.
After all, the headline was for a story about how your campaign was winning. You just stepped on your headlines, silly.
It’s like the Connie Mack campaign is taking its cues from the Mitt Romney campaign. In fact, it should be any minute now before Mr. Cohen pulls out an Etch-a-Sketch…
