Today, the Florida Senate continued its efforts to crack down on Internet cafés when the Select Committee on Gaming passed a bill prohibiting strip mall casinos that are hurting communities across Florida.

Count the Florida Chamber among those pleased to see the ban progressing.

The Florida Chamber of Commerce says it has long opposed the expansion of gambling and Internet cafés, and their threat to Florida’s quality of life.

“Today is the first of many steps in the right direction to stop the degradation of Florida’s communities,” said Adam Giery, the Florida Chamber’s Director of Education, Talent and Quality of Life Policy, during his testimony to the Senate Gaming Committee.  “The Florida Chamber has been a long-time supporter of prohibiting Internet cafés, and we applaud the Florida Senate for taking action to improve Florida’s quality of life.”

In a release, the Chamber thanked Sens. John Thrasher and Garrett Richter for “their work on this good bill.”
