Florida’s leading gubernatorial candidates — Republican incumbent Rick Scott and Democratic challenger Charlie Crist— faced off in their final debate Tuesday night.
The two clashed over nearly everything: the economy, the state’s minimum wage, Cuba and medical marijuana.
But for Joshua Karp of the Florida Democratic Party, the most jarring moment in Jacksonville was what he calls “a classic gaffe – telling the truth, for once.”
Scott had openly admitted that Attorney General Pam Bondi requested permission last year to reschedule a death row execution, scheduled for the same night as a Tampa “campaign kickoff” fundraiser.
Bondi later apologized for making the request and, at the time, Scott told reporters he was unaware of the reason for the delay.
At the debate, however, Crist continued to press the issue with Scott, asking him several times if he knew Bondi’s request was for a fundraiser.
Scott then responded, “She apologized, Charlie. What would you like her to do?”
“He doesn’t answer questions,” Crist shot back. “Pleads the Fifth.”
