Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell running in SD 39, will challenge Anitere Flores

Anitere Flores has a Democrat challenger.

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has announced she will run for in Senate District 39. State records show Mucarsel-Powell filed the initial paperwork to run for the South Florida seat on Thursday. She has until noon Friday to qualify to get on the ballot.

The Pinecrest Democrat has a background in fundraising. According to her Linkedin page, Mucarsel-Powell spent three years as the associate vice president for advancement at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Before that, she was FIU’s director of development.

The late entry could mean Democrats have a chance to capture Senate District 39. Earlier this week, Democrat Andrew Korge announced he was switching districts, running in Senate District 40 instead.

Brent Artz, a write-in candidate, has also qualified for the race. Shelia Y. Lucas George, a no party affiliate candidate, has also filed to run for the seat.

Qualifying for legislative seats ends at noon Friday.
