The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Wednesday stepped up its attack on north Florida Congressman Steve Southerland.
The DCCC released a web video featuring district voters attacking Southerland for policies they say goes against the interests of students, the elderly and working people. Southerland is being challenged by Gwen Graham; the daughter of former Gov. Bob Graham.
The video comes on the heels of Southerland refusing to answer questions about a trip to a Texas hunting ranch sponsored by sugar interests. Southerland has proposed sugar-back legislation that weakens enforcement of water regulations. Democrats refer to that an example of Steve Southerland’s Washington Ways, which is also the theme of the video.
“Congressman Steve Southerland’s scandal surrounding his sugar lobbyist backers is only the latest example in his long record of partisan and self-interested Washington politics,” said David Bergstein of the DCCC.
Democrats see an opportunity to flip the sprawling north Florida district from Republican to Democrat Graham. She’s raised more money than Southerland and the Cook Political Report recently moved the race from the Republican column to “toss up.”
The Republicans counter attack on Graham focuses on her ties to Secretary of State John Kerry and former Democratic Committee Chair Howard Dean and a liberal agenda that includes support for Obamacare.
