Florida Democrats say Tom Lee’s anti-Crist robo-calls are out of bounds

Democrats are crying foul over a series of rob calls to registered Democrats that Republican Sen. Tom Lee of Brandon is taking credit for.

The calls replay a Charlie Crist message from Charlie Crist’s 2006 gubernatorial campaign when Crist ran as a Republican.  And the Democratic Party has filed a formal complaint with the Florida Elections Commission against Lee and Gov. Rick Scott.

Democrats say the calls were made on behalf of Scott’s re-election campaign.

Allison Tant, chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, filed the complaint. It cites a state law which forbids telephone calls representing another person or organization without their or its written approval. Ch. 106.147(1)(c), states that “No telephone call shall state or imply that the caller represents any person or organization unless the person of organization so represented has given specific approval in writing to make such representation.”

Lee is affiliated with an electioneering communications organization called Conservatives. It paid for about two million phone calls to broadcast a recording  in which Crist proclaimed he was a pro-life, Ronald Reagan Republican who opposed same sex message, positions the now Democrat Crist no longer espouses.
