Dept. of Justice follows through and files suit to stop Rick Scott's voter purge

Following up on its announcement Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday filed suit in federal court, charging that Florida ongoing effort to purge voter rolls violates the National Voter Registration Act and should be stopped, reports the News Service of Florida.

The nine-page complaint, filed in Tallahassee, says state officials are barred for culling the voter rolls within 90 days of a primary or general election for federal office. With Florida primaries scheduled for Aug. 14, that deadline passed May 16th. The agency filed its suit a day after Florida’s election officials filed a suit in Washington D.C. against the Department of Homeland Security to open up a federal database to allow the state to cull ineligible voters from the rolls. Earlier Tuesday, Gov. Rick Scott defended the state’s action in a series of interviews with national media outlets.
