As Democrats gather in Charlotte this week to officially nominate President Barack Obama for a second term, Florida delegate Shannon Love will be offering an on-the-ground perspective of the convention. Here is her latest dispatch:
In my previous blog post, I wrote about the fact that Charlotte overwhelmingly felt like a party compared to the Republican National Convention. In the streets, estimates included nearly 30,000 people. Some of the coolest experiences are things such as the MSNBC experience and the Google Hangout. The Google Hangout (made up of what looked like storage containers and a roof overhead) provided much needed relief from the crowds. Local news are providing a lot of access for the public for events. In each experience, you can see things such as getting a photo from a commentator (in MSNBC), send a video message for the troops (via a Google Hangout), or go and watch news shows be broadcast outside. Aside from the basic promotion of Google, the hangout provided a showcase of their Google car, talked about the economic they have had in different states (around 4.4 billion for Florida), and offered food and refreshments for visitors. On the streets the famous race car the Democratic National Convention used to raise funds for this convention. On it are the names of each of the people who contributed $5 or more to help fundraise for the trip.
Back at the Florida Delegation hotel, people showed up in droves and partied. Charlotte has decided to see a Democratic National Convention beer (an ale), as well as a variety of things democrat related. The third floor served as a delegate credential spot, and the National Education Association hosted an event there. Some delegates were sporting county delegation hats (such as the creative ones Pinellas County created) to show support and stand out.
