State Rep. Ronald “Doc” Renuart said he “definitely” plans to run the Senate opening up by Sen. John Thrasher becoming Florida State University president.
Thrasher, the St. Augustine Republican, is seeking re-election in two weeks for Senate District 6.
However, just a few days after Nov. 4, the state university systemโs Board of Governors should confirm Thrasher as FSU president. If he wins re-election, and steps down to take the university job, there will be a special election to fill his seat.
This week, Renuart filed for a campaign account that would apply to the special election. On Wednesday, he was in Tallahassee to shore up support.
“I feel this is the best way that I’ll be able to represent my region,โ Renuart said. โFor the issues that are important to us in the First Coast and Northeast Florida area,”
District 6 includes St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam counties and a section of Volusia County.
Other potential special election candidates include Elkton Republican state Rep. Travis Hutson.
