Dr. Steven Harris named interim Secretary of Dept. of Health

With state Surgeon General Frank Farmer resigning last week, veteran public-health physician Steven L. Harris has been named as an interim replacement, the Florida Department of Health announced Tuesday. Harris joined the department in August 2011 and has served as deputy secretary of health. Before that, he worked in a number of public-health roles including 19 years as a medical director for sexually transmitted disease clinics and HIV/AIDS programs and nine years in tuberculosis programs and outreach, according to information released by the department. He also served as a physician in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and as health officer and medical director for the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department in Texas. The surgeon general also serves as secretary of the Department of Health.
