SaintPetersBlog reported this week that sources close to St. Pete businessman Ed Montanari say he plans to run for City Council in the upcoming municipal elections. Montanari would run for the District 3 seat currently held by Bill Dudley. Dudley is not seeking re-election due to term-limits.
Montanari has a long track record of civil service and has become a pillar of the business community. He’s so involved many view him as an unofficial ninth member of Council.
This service in the community has already earned Montanari the support of several local leaders should he officially announce a bid for city council.
“St. Petersburg needs public servants like Ed Montanari. Ed is the true embodiment of what makes St. Petersburg special,” wrote State Senator Jeff Brandes in a text message. “I am excited he has chosen to seek the office and will enthusiastically be supporting him and his campaign.”
Montanari has served as a member of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Council for more than seven years. He’s also served on the Community Planning and Preservation Commission and some high-profile task forces including those working on issues pertaining to the Pier and the Tampa Bay Rays.
“I’ve strongly encouraged Ed to run,” said former Mayor Rick Baker. “I can’t think of anyone more equipped to lead our city. He’s already proven a commitment to the city.”
Montanari ran against Bill Dudley unsuccessfully in 2007. He considered challenging Dudley again, but eventually decided not to. With Dudley vacating that seat, it seems the tide may be in Montanari’s favor this time around.
St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce President Chris Steinocher is also offering his support.
“If you look in the dictionary under public servant, I’m pretty sure you’ll find a picture of Ed … Since i’ve been here at the chamber, there’s been a handful of leaders like Ed who are willing to listen to all sides, be thoughtful towards all aspects of any situation, and keep a clear focus on what makes St Pete a great city,: Steinocher wrote in an email. “I’m sure there are many people excited with the notion of someone of his caliber taking on a role as important as city council”
Local business and corporate attorney Rob Kapusta is also offering his support.
“I would strongly support his candidacy,” Kapusta said. “His leadership throughout the years, his love for the city of St. Pete … he is a very throurough person and looks at all sides of the issues and tries to do what is best for the City of t. Petersburg ”
Montanari may even find himself with the support of some current Councilmembers. Though she did not specifically endorse Montanari in an eventual bid, Council Vice Chair Amy Foster spoke highly of the community leader.
“Ed and I have an excellent working relationship and I have always found him to be thorough and fair,” Foster said. “He has a firm grasp on issues facing the city and his historical and contextual knowledge would be an asset.”
