That’s it, they did it.
Smoke ’em if you got ’em — if you do, just wait until November.
In an email to supporters, United for Care celebrated a crucial milestone today; the pro-medical marijuana group collected enough signed petitions — over 1.1 million — to get the measure on the ballot.
United for Care Campaign Manager Ben Pollara begins by thanking thousands of workers and volunteers, and specifically John Morgan, who spearheaded (and largely financed) the effort.
However, gathering petitions is only the beginning. The measure still needs approval by the Florida Supreme Court, facing considerable opposition from both Republican lawmakers and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Pollara and Untied for Care have a significant challenge, educating Florida voters on why it is appropriate to change the state constitution. There is the long road to selling the public on the benefits of legalizing marijuana, even though more than 80 percent say they support the initiative.
To paraphrase an old saying, “You can lead a voter to the ballot booth, but you can’t make them think.”
Marijuana supporters need a lot of help, but they are clearly off to a good start.
