Equality Florida plans rallies today for SCOTUS LGBT rulings

in Uncategorized by

Sometime over the next few days, the U.S. Supreme Court will announce two of the most important LGBT rights decisions of this decade. The Court will rule on two cases—the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8.

In anticipation of these significant SCOTUS decisions, Equality Florida is organizing a series of free rallies in St. Petersburg, Tampa and other cities around the state.

The rulings will be historic moments for the issue of marriage equality in the United States. They could come as soon as Monday, June 17, but definitely by the end of June, so Equality wants supporters to be ready.

Regardless of when the decisions come down, Equality members will gather in St. Petersburg at North Straub Park at 5 p.m. the day of the announcement.

Organizers ask participants to wear green, as well as bring signs and banners.

At 5:30 p.m. the day of the rally, there will be brief remarks by Equality Florida leaders, elected officials and community leaders. Afterwards, Steve Westphal invites participants to continue the conversation on moving forward by meeting at 400 Beach Dr. and Parkshore Grille on Beach Drive.

In Tampa, after announcement of the SCOTUS rulings, there will be a gathering at the Hillsborough County Courthouse on 800 E. Twiggs St.

Since the announcement dates are yet unknown, the rally will be held 7 p.m. on the day the Supreme Court rulings are announced. Equality Campaign, Pride Tampa Bay and GetEQUAL are organizing the Hillsborough County event.
