Despite its failure to frame St. Petersburg’s Mayoral Election as an us=versus-them vote on gay rights, Equality Florida is now attempting to cast the race to represent District 5 on the City Council as an “historic” referendum on gay rights. What follows are excerpts from an e-mail Equality Florida’s PAC distributed immediately after Tuesday’s primary:

Openly-Gay Candidate Steve Kornell Dominates St. Pete Primary for City Council Now He Needs Your Help in the General Election

Yesterday, Steve Kornell took a huge step toward making history in Florida as St. Pete’s first openly-LGBT city council member by overwhelmingly winning a three-way Primary Election with 49% of the vote among District 5 voters.

Now Steve moves to the city-wide general election – a huge hurdle – but winnable with your support. The next ten days are crucial to Steve winning the General Election and that’s where you come in. Steve needs to raise enough money to mail every likely voter before absentee voting begins.

Please make a donation to Steve’s campaign today.

Steve’s well-deserved endorsements include St. Petersburg Times, Equality Florida Action PAC and Pinellas Stonewall Democrats. With strong support right now – Steve can win…

…Your contribution will help to make St. Pete the largest city in Florida to have an openly-LGBT council member…Please join us as we help Steve make history.
