Life and politics from the Sunshine State's best city

Excerpts from Jeff Greene’s Jefferson-Jackson speech

Below are excerpts of Jeff Greene’s prepared speech for the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner:

“I know some of you were surprised by my entry into this race.  And, no, I’m not a politician and I haven’t spent my life in party politics.   But I am committed to the Democratic Party, I care deeply about our country, our state and our future and that’s why I’m doing this.”

“I will stand up for real Democratic values, and the difference in November between me and Rubio and Crist will be clear: two career politicians who are both involved in corruption scandals, versus me, an outsider who knows how to get results; two failures who were in office while we’ve lost almost 650,000 jobs, versus me, someone who understands the economy and knows how to create jobs; two politicians who are in the back pockets of the special interests who fund their campaigns, or someone independent of the political system, who won’t take one penny of special interest money.”

“I will never take any PAC money or lobbyist money — not now, never.  And I will donate my entire congressional salary to charities here in Florida.  My only special interest will be you, the people of Florida.”

“I’ve lived the American Dream.  Unfortunately, because of Washington’s failure, too many Americans today are living the American nightmare!”

“The good news is our economic problems are solvable.  But we need people who understand that we are in an economic world war. We can and we will win this war.  But, we have to make sure our workers have a level playing field, our kids are the best educated in the world and that our infrastructure is renewed so we can remain competitive.  We have to revitalize our economy, so that it is our products that these billions of new consumers in countries like China, India, Korea and Brazil are buying.”

“Now that we have 2 Republicans running in this Senate campaign, this is a very winnable seat.  But, we will only win with a candidate who can make a real and distinct contrast.  That’s your choice on August 24th.  “More of the same” career politicians who have failed us, and me, an outsider who has created jobs, had success, is independent of a corrupt political system, and will beat Crist and Rubio in November.”

“I would be honored to be your Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.  But, no matter what happens, I am committed to winning this seat in November.  And, I pledge to you tonight that I will support whoever the nominee is, and I will do whatever it takes to help the Democratic ticket win from top to bottom.  Because there is nothing more important to me than making sure that neither Marco Rubio nor Charlie Crist win this seat.”
