Republicans have been beating up on Democrats who got money from Charlie Rangel, but now a Democrat is too.
Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre, running in the Florida Democratic primary for Senate, is demanding that Rep. Kendrick Meek give back $5,000 he got from the Ways and Means Committee chairman after the ethics committee found Rangel should have known corporations sponsored a Caribbean conference he attended.
“Kendrick Meek should be more aware of the company he keeps and return the money he received from Chairman Rangel,” said Ferre. “Charlie Rangel has continually abused his powerful chairmanship while Kendrick Meek has stayed quiet, silently reaping the rewards of corruption in Congress to the tune of $5,000.”
“Voters across the state of Florida are sick of the political games played in Washington,” said Ferre. “Florida needs a Senator who will fight the corruption in our nation’s capital so that our government can work better for the people that need it most — not special interests.”
Several Democrats have returned Rangel money, but he maintains the support of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House leaders.
