The St. Petersburg Association of Firefighters, the union that represents Lealman firefighters, has endorsed Jorge Mercado in the upcoming election.
Mercado is running against incumbent Jay D. Alexander for Seat 3 on the Lealman Fire District Commission.
“I am greatly honored and humbled by having their support,” Mercado said.
Mercado is a 26-year resident of Lealman and has an emergency medical technician certification from St. Petersburg College. He works as a master scheduler at DRS Laurel Technologies in Largo. He serves on the Lealman Community Development Area advisory council, is a member of the Lealman Community Association and formerly served on its board, and is an officer in the Knights of Columbus.
The Lealman Fire District is an independent agency that oversees fire and emergency medical service in the unincorporated Lealman area. It is run by an elected five-member board that is responsible for setting policy, establishing a budget and setting the tax rate. The Lealman department has two fire stations in the Lealman area and contracts with Tierra Verde to provide fire and emergency medical service to those residents.
The unincorporated Lealman area is roughly located between Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg on the north and south, and between I-275 and Park Street on the east and west. Kenneth City divides it in two.
The District 3 seat is voted on by all voters in the Lealman Fire District. The election is Nov. 8.
