Former House member and current Osceola County Commissioner John Quinones, a Republican, says he’ll run for the newly drawn 9th Congressional District in central Florida, taking on Democrat Alan Grayson. Quinones, 46, told the Orlando Sentinel (via the News Service of Florida) he plans to remain chairman of the county commission. The district includes all of Osceola County, which has a fast growing Hispanic population, and parts of Orange and Polk counties. In addition to Grayson, a former congressman with a substantial following nationally on the left, the race also already includes Republican Osceola County School Board member Julius Menendez and independent Miguel Nieves. Republican Mark Oxner also is campaigning for the seat, though he hasn’t filed to run.
