Florida Senate President-designate Don Gaetz today announced his selection of Senator Garrett Richter as Senate President Pro Tempore.

Senator Richter is the first named member of incoming Senate President Gaetz’s leadership team.

After serving one term in the House of Representatives, Senator Richter was elected and subsequently re-elected without opposition by his Southwest Florida district to the state Senate. This upcoming session marks his seventh year representing his community in the Florida Legislature, the past four of which he served as chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee.

“There is no doubt where Senator Richter stands on the issues that matter to Florida’s future,” said President-designate Gaetz. “But, he has the exceptional capacity to listen to all sides and craft solutions that earn broad support.”

Additionally, President-designate Gaetz noted that his choice of Senator Richter is also based on the Naples Republican’s lifetime of experience in starting small businesses and creating jobs for Floridians.

“When economic policy is being developed and debated, we need the common sense and entrepreneurial talent of a leader who signs the front side of paychecks,” explained Senator Gaetz. “That’s Garrett Richter. He knows firsthand what it’s like to sit at the kitchen table and figure out how to meet the payroll on Friday. He has become a highly successful community banker because he knows how to build trust and compete to bring businesses and jobs to our state.”

Senator Richter’s new appointment will become effective Nov. 20, when the Senate convenes for its organizational session. The position of President Pro Tempore must receive a formal nomination and vote of approval by the full Senate during the Organization Session.
