Navy veteran Greg Para has pulled out of the race against state Rep. Ray Pilon in the House District 72 race.

“Due to my inability to generate interest in my candidacy coupled with no support from local or state leadership of the Democratic Party, I will be suspending my campaign,” the Democrat said in an email to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

In September 2013, Para announced his intent to run against the two-term Republican for the seat covering most of Sarasota County east of U.S. 301 and north of Osprey.

On Saturday, Para posted on his Facebook page that he could return to the race “if enough support arises” before qualifying period begins in June.

To date, Para has raised around $16,000 for his campaign, spending about $15,600.
