Halloween is going to scare up some frightfully big numbers in 2014.

Halloween, by the numbers, courtesy of Forbes Magazine and Statista:

  • Americans will spend $7.4 billion on Halloween products this year, according to the National Retail Federation.
  • Of that number $2.8 billion will be spent on costumes.
  • In addition to the three most popular costumes — animal; Batman character and witch — Americans will also spend a whopping $350 million on costumes for pets. Do not be surprised if you see animals dressed as pumpkins, hot dogs and devils on Halloween night.
  • More than three-quarters (78 percent) of people in the United States say they plan to dress up this year, with 20 percent of them using homemade costumes.
  • In 2013, 158 million people Americans celebrated Halloween, a number expected to jump to 162 million in 2014.
  • The NRF also says average expenditure will be $87 for young adults, and $77.52 per person in total.
  • Polling shows that 47 percent say they will decorate their home or yard, and 33.4 percent are planning to throw or attend a party.
  • A majority of Americans (77.1 percent) plan to hand out candy to trick or treaters.
