Haridopolos hauls in $2.6 million for his campaign

Senate President Mike Haridopolos announced that he raised $2.6 million for his U.S. Senate campaign during the first three months of the year.

His sizable haul was larger than what U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson announced that he had raised for the same time period. Nelson’s re-election campaign said the incumbent Democrat has raised $2 million during the first quarter of 2011, and that he has between $4.5 million and $5 million in the bank all together.

Haridopolos has been able to raise money during the legislative session although he has said he is not holding any organized fundraisers during the 60-day period. Legal opinions drafted by House and Senate lawyers over the last decade state that rules that prohibit fundraising during session do not apply to federal candidates.
