He’s had a great run, but Derek Newton leaving ACLU of Florida

If Florida were England, Derek Newton would be identified as one of the key leaders of Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition.

That is because Newton, as Communications Director for the ACLU of Florida, has been at the very forefront of the opposition to the somewhat-tyrannical governor of Florida, Rick Scott.

As an organization, the ACLU of Florida has been on quite an impressive run since Scott took office, tying up in the courts almost all of Scott’s signature issues, such as mandatory drug testing of welfare recipients. Derek Newton has played a key role in advocating and defending the ACLU’s role in these debates.

Unfortunately for the ACLU, Newton announced today he is moving on.  Likely back to the consulting world Derek has done so well in the past decade.

Newton can take comfort in knowing that, as a member of the Loyal Opposition, he’s had a great run.
