House approves earlier session start

Beginning in 2016, the Florida Legislature could start in January as opposed to March, according to a bill passed by the House on Thursday.

By a 102-11 vote, the House approved HB 9 calling for the earlier launch of the annual 60-day legislative session for even-numbered years.

State lawmakers usually begin session in early March, which lasts until the beginning of May. The Senate companion (SB 72) moves the starting date for only the 2016 session, leaving the decision for later years on future legislators.
