House includes top priority of potential Senate president in health agency overhaul

Declaring it a “work in progress” Rep. Matt Hudson asked members of a House health care panel on Monday to approve his proposed overhaul of the state’s largest health care agency, reports Christine Jordan Sexton.

But before voting for HB 1263 along partisan lines, the Health and Human Services Committeeincluded in the Department of Health revamp a legislative proposal being pushed by Sen. Andy Gardiner.

The health department overhaul is a priority for Hudson, a Naples Republican. He has worked on trying to reorganize and reshape the agency since first being elected in 2007.

But the Senate companion, SB 1824, still has not been released by Rules Committee Chairman Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, which is essentially stalling the measure in the Senate.

Last week, though, Thrasher said  the bill wasn’t being stalled and that it would move along. He called nonsense the rumors that the bill was being held because its sponsor, Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, didn’t’ support him in an ongoing leadership fight with Gardiner.
