U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has endorsed Republican Carlos Curbelo in the race for Florida’s 26th Congressional District.

Ros-Lehtinen represents Florida’s 27th Congressional District, which covers Miami-Dade and served as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee until 2013. She announced her endorsement of Curbelo on CBS4’s Sunday morning political talker Facing South Florida.

“Carlos represents a new generation of leaders in South Florida,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “His work on the School Board to make government more accountable to the people and dedication to our community are the marks of a true public servant. I know he will work diligently in Congress for lower taxes, fewer regulations, and a stronger economy.”

Curbelo has served as a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board since his election in 2010. Florida’s 26th Congressional District encompasses much of southwestern Miami-Dade County and all of Monroe County.

“Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is a great leader and role model for all who aspire to serve the public, said Curbelo in response to Sunday’s endorsement. “She was the first Hispanic woman to win election to the United States Congress, and has consistently delivered for her constituents in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Ileana has also fought tirelessly for a coherent foreign policy that rewards America’s allies and holds its enemies accountable.”

Many view Curbelo as the favored Republican to unseat incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia, who continues to fend off allegations staff was involved in absentee ballot fraud. Garcia has been under a cloud of controversy and scandal since shortly after his 2012 election. His Chief of Staff was convicted of fraud last year and his campaign remains under FBI investigation.
