iLovetheBurg to celebrate #BurgIsTheWord with five parties in May

One of St. Petersburg’s treasures is turning five, and they want to celebrate with you.

“iLovetheBurg,” the popular blog and website devoted to life, fun and culture in downtown St. Pete, celebrates its fifth anniversary (and the start of summer) with a month-long series of events under the banner #BurgIsTheWord.

In honor of the brand’s phenomenal success, the City of St. Petersburg is declaring May “iLovetheBurg Month.”

The series of festivities includes movies, arts, games, music — and lots of beer — throughout the month, beginning Friday, May 2 with “Tap ‘Dat ‘Burg” release party at Green Bench Brewing, the newest craft brewery in the city’s booming Edge District, located at 1133 Baum Avenue.

As part of the festivities, Green Bench is introducing a limited run “Burg Brew” starting at 7 p.m. The event will also feature local food trucks, live music and a special edition Burg is the Word t-shirt.

iLovetheBurg, both the website and Facebook page, launched in March 2009 by the local creative design team at Rearden Killion Communications (now known as According to its website, iLoveTheBurg began as a place to share information about goings on in and around downtown St. Petersburg, emerging from “sheer enthusiasm for the city during the depth of the ‘great recession.’”

Since then, became a hit in the Sunshine City, transforming the website into the go-to place for everyone who loves life in “The ‘Burg.” In 2012 and 2013, Creative Loafing Tampa readers voted “Best of the Bay” for 2012 and 2013.

Other events during the BurgIsTheWord include ‘Burg Mule Nite at Mandarin Hide (May 8), ‘Burg Is the Word Art Show at Blue Lucy (May 17), Movies in the Park presenting “The Jerk” (May 22) and Burg-A-Lympics at 3 Daughters Brewing (May 31).

The Burg-A-Lympics are a day of friendly competition, where players compete at miniature golf, corn hole and table shuffleboard.
