Twice, he has won football games. Twice, Jameis Winston of the Tampa Bay Bucs has been the offensive rookie of the week.
Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Winston completed 13-of-19 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown for a passer rating of 122.5 in the team’s 38-31 win. His 11.0 yards per attempt rank as the second-best mark by any quarterback in Week 5, while his 122.5 passer rating was the fourth-highest in the NFL last week. Winston’s 122.5 passer rating also stands as the fourth-best mark by a rookie in Buccaneers’ history.
This is Winston’s second Rookie of the Week Award (also Week 2 at New Orleans). He joins former Buccaneers running back Carnell Williams as the only players in franchise history to win the award more than once (Williams won Weeks 1-3, 2005). This is Tampa Bay’s third Rookie of the Week Award this season (LB Kwon Alexander, Week 3 at Houston.)
Also, Doug Martin has been voted FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week for Week 5.
Going against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Martin rushed 24 times for 123 yards (5.1 avg.) with two touchdowns, while catching three passes for 35 yards and one touchdown. His 123 rushing yards were the fourth-most in the NFL for Week 5, with his two rushing touchdowns tying for the most in the league. Martin’s three touchdowns from scrimmage were the most in the NFL for Week 5.
With his three touchdowns from scrimmage against Jacksonville, Martin joined former Buccaneers fullback and 2015 Ring of Honor inductee Mike Alstott as the only players in franchise history with multiple games of three or more touchdowns. Martin is also only the second player in team history to record two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in the same game (also Bobby Rainey vs. Atlanta in 2013).
Martin’s two rushing touchdowns gave him 17 for his career, placing him seventh on the team’s all-time rushing touchdown list, while his 100-yard rushing performance was the ninth of his career, tying him with Williams for the third-most by a running back in team history.
This is Martin’s fourth career FedEx Ground Player of the Week award, after winning three in 2012. His four wins are the most by any player in franchise history. Martin is the first Buccaneers player to win FedEx Ground Player of the Week honors since 2013 (Rainey, Week 11).
