JD Alexander to court clerks: ‘It could be worse’

After some clerks of court complained that a cut in state funding could lead to layoffs and reduced services, Senate Budget Chairman JD Alexander said Wednesday that things could have been worse, reports the News Service of Florida. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, said the clerks would have faced a $54 million cut under the proposal put forward by the House, instead of the more than $30 million cut that lawmakers ultimately agreed to. “They should say, ‘Thank you, Senate,’ for saving half of their money,” Alexander said. The Associated Press reported earlier Wednesday that the cuts could ultimately eliminate 900 jobs and reduce hours across the state.
