Senator John Thrasher, former Speaker of the Florida House, as well as former Chairman of the Republican Party, has decided he does not want to add one more title to his biography, that of President of the Florida Senate.
As first reported here and later confirmed by Matt Dixon of the Florida Times-Union, Thrasher is, unequivocally, not seeking the Senate Presidency.
“I’m dropping out and supporting Joe Negron,” said Thrasher early Friday morning. “I don’t have to be Senate President. I’ve never had to be Senate President.”
Thrasher’s statement raises an interesting point. Other than his ill-fated coup, was he ever really running for the post? As a matter of fact, he hasn’t been soliciting support.
“I don’t have a pledge card,” he said to Dixon. “I have not been going out and trying to get support.”
