Karl Nurse is launching his campaign to keep his St. Petersburg District 6 seat with a fundraiser set for Wednesday, June 26.
Nurse invites friends and supporters to his re-election kick-off event, which begins 5:30 p.m. at the lobby of the Mt. Vernon Condominiums. District 6 covers a majority of downtown and the southeast portion of St. Petersburg.
An early supporter of the Lens, Nurse renewed his position last year, publicly coming out against the increasingly unpopular version of the Pier. As Council chair, he has since voted to suspend spending on the project, as well as firmly supporting the August 27 citywide vote on the fate of the Lens.
A June 17 survey by StPetePolls found nearly 63 percent of registered voters oppose the Lens Pier project. More than 35 percent said the main reason was a lack of voter input on the future of the Pier.
Nurse’s stance the Pier, on one of the most contentious issue in St. Petersburg city politics, is most likely why he is riding a wave of popularity to retain his Council seat in November.
In a June 4 poll, Nurse was firmly in the lead, even against hypothetical candidates like the City Recreation Manager Thomas “Jet” Jackson and Blanche L. Ganey, former editor of The Weekly Challenger.
So far, with the qualification period for candidates ending June 24, the only announced opponent to Nurse’s re-election bid has been Republican activist Sharon Russ.
The Mt. Vernon Condominiums are at 219 Fourth Ave. North in St. Petersburg. Street parking will be available. For more information or to RSVP, email [email protected]. Online contributions are also welcome at www.electkarlnurse.com/contribute.
