Kendrick Meek, who’s in the fight of his political life against newcomer billionaire Jeff Greene for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Florida, will get a speaking role at the event President Barack Obama is headlining in the Sunshine State for the local Democratic Party, a senior Democrat tells POLITICO.
Meek was not initially expected to appear at the event, but the White House confirmed within the past two weeks that he would have a role at the president’s stop in Florida, part of a three-day fundraising swing next week.
It had been unclear, though, what Meek’s role would be, and a source close to him had told POLITICO that he expected a recommitment of the president’s endorsement of him at the event — amid widespread concerns by the candidate’s boosters that Democrats nationally, including the White House, are flirting with independent candidate Charlie Crist.
