The Weekly Standard blog reports Sen. Marco Rubio announced that will be the lead sponsor of a Senate proposal banning abortion after 20 weeks. Last month, the House passed a similar measure and another bill is sitting in the Texas legislature, currently under heated debate.
Rubio’s name on abortion legislation will certainly give it intense media attention and the national visibility it needs. Anti-abortion advocates have pushed the high-profile Senator to sponsor the bill, seeing him as the strongest Senate advocate for their position.
Republicans and the anti-abortion movement consider the 20-week ban as one that has a wellspring of voter support, and the numbers bear that out. In January, a Gallup survey found 64 percent of Americans think abortion in the second three months of pregnancy should be illegal.
Rubio’s role in the abortion debate could also bolster his 2016 presidential chances, bringing back some GOP credibility Rubio lost with key conservatives over his support of the immigration reform bill that passed the Senate last week.
