A group of Tampa’s best and brightest political stars is helping Michael Scionti launch his campaign for Circuit Court Judge, Group 19. The former representative of Florida House District 58 invites friends and supporters to a kick-off celebration this afternoon to promote his run for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit.

The event will be from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Siboney Dining Room of the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. The Columbia is at 2117 E Seventh Ave.

Scionti is hoping to bring his impressive and wide-ranging resume, which include political, military and diplomatic triumphs, to the Hillsborough County Judicial Courts. He is looking to replace retiring Chief Judge Manuel Menendez, Jr.

Tonight’s event features many of the biggest names in Tampa Bay politics. A few of the luminaries on the host committee for the reception/fundraiser includes U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, current Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and former Mayor Dick Grecco.

Prior to running for Hillsborough Circuit Court Judge, Scionti previously worked in the Pentagon. He recently returned from a diplomatic mission in Afghanistan. As a well-respected diplomat, Scionti was appointed by President Obama as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Intergovernmental Affairs.

In addition to a distinguished diplomatic career, Scionti has a long list of military accomplishments. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he served two combat tours of duty, in Iraq and Afghanistan, receiving the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Presidential Unit Citation.

Scionti was also Judge Advocate General in military intelligence, where he has been since 2000.
