Republican National Committee chairman Michael S. Steele said he’s disappointed in Florida Gov. Charlie Crist for not sticking with the GOP.
Following a press conference in Tampa to promote the 2012 national convention, Steele said Crist should have stayed in the Republican Primary and respected the primary process.
“I’m very disappointed in him,” Steele said. “I don’t think that was a necessary move. The primary process is there for a reason. It should have played out.”
But Steele quickly added that the party is “very excited” about Marco Rubio, who is now the expected GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate.
Steele also downplayed Crist’s role in helping Tampa win the 2012 convention. Though Crist was the honorary chairman of Tampa’s bid process and toured parts of the region with the site selection committee, Steele said he had little impact on the real work of getting Tampa chosen.
