Today, Michelle Popp Shimberg formally announced her candidacy for Hillsborough County School Board, District 2, filing all necessary documents with the Supervisor of Elections and opening her campaign account.
For more than 20 years, Shimberg has been a well-known and respected advocate for public school children in Hillsborough County. Along with 18 years on the Citizen Advisory Committee to the School Board, including stints as chair, vice-chair and scholarship chair, she has served in leadership positions on five other school-related organizations. She also served two terms as the national president of Delta Delta Delta, a women’s fraternal organization with more than 150,000 members, overseeing a multi-million dollar budget.
“I care deeply about our public school system and have a longstanding commitment to public schools in Hillsborough County,” said Shimberg. “As a member of the school board, I know I can make a difference in the lives of our students.”
Schimberg’s leadership in local school organizations includes multiple terms and roles as president of the PTSA at Mitchell Elementary School, Wilson Middle School and Plant High School. She also served as president of the academic foundations at Wilson Middle School and Plant High School. She has served on the school improvement teams at Mitchell Elementary School, Plant High School and the Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School. Michelle has also volunteered as a classroom tutor and a college and career counseling assistant. Currently, she works with at-risk high school students, mentors college women and is a replacement driver for Meals on Wheels.
“Having served in leadership roles on several boards, I understand the importance of working collaboratively to find meaningful and practical solutions,” commented Shimberg.
