State Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda is calling for Gov. Rick Scott to give state employees two additional days of paid leave during the holiday season.
In a letter to the governor released today, the Democrat from Tallahassee says the move will reward state employees, so they can celebrate and spend more time with families.
Both Christmas and New Year’s Day falls on a Thursday this year. Rather than returning to work for one day on Friday after having Thursday off, Vasilinda suggests closing state offices on Friday, December 26, 2014, and Friday, January 2, 2015. The move would give state workers two four-day weekends.
Those employees unable to take advantage of the additional holiday leave should receive compensatory time, Vasilinda says .
“Public service is an honorable profession, one that puts others above self, one that creates a public trust and bond,” she says. “Very few private companies would forego employee raises for as long as ours have gone without.
“It isn’t good business,” Vasilinda adds.
