Panama City RepublicanĀ Neal DunnĀ has filed for Floridaās 2nd Congressional District, ensuring there will a GOP primary in 2016.
Dunn is the Panhandle urologist who will face newcomerĀ Mary Thomas, the general counsel for Gov.Ā Rick Scottās Department of Elder Affairs, in next yearāsĀ Republican primary.
The winner will seek to unseatĀ incumbent U.S. Rep.Ā Gwen Graham,Ā aĀ first-term Democrat.
Dunnās entry on the race is the latest move by North Florida Republicans battling for the title of āmost conservative,ā in what could become a long, combative campaign.
Even before filing, DunnĀ wasĀ underĀ attack by opponents for being a RINO:Ā Republican in Name Only.
A longtime Bay County Republican and formerĀ Steve SoutherlandĀ supporter, Dunn had beenĀ appointed by state Sen.Ā Don GaetzĀ in 2014 to the Enterprise Florida Board of Directors.
Nevertheless, whatĀ raises the ire of a handful ofĀ North Florida conservativesĀ was a donation from Dunn toĀ Charlie Crist, theĀ former Republican governor running against Tea Party favoriteĀ Marco RubioĀ for the U.S. Senate in 2010.
Although theĀ $1,000 donation, made in September 2009, it was months before Crist switched from Republican to run as an independent, Crist later became a Democrat toĀ runĀ governor in 2014.
CristāsĀ party switch rankled many in the Florida GOP, and is widely credited for hisĀ narrow lossĀ to Scott ā a largely unpopular governor ā last year.
Among other concernsĀ are donations Dunn made in 2005 and 2006 to Democratic Rep.Ā Allen Boyd,Ā as well as money to U.S. Sen.Ā Bill NelsonĀ in theĀ race againstĀ Connie MackĀ in 2012.
Dunn campaign spokespersonĀ Marc ReichelderferĀ dismisses the accusations as āabsolutely false.ā
In am email toĀ Florida Politics, Reichelderfer saidĀ that inĀ the last 20 years, Dunn, in his own name, contributed more than $58,000 to Republican candidates and the Republican Party.
āTo single out a few other contributions to try and use as an indictment against Dr. Dunnās Republican credentials is completely disingenuous,ā he added.
Another claim by opponentsĀ attempts to putĀ the newly minted candidateĀ at odds withĀ fiscal conservatives. AsĀ Florida PoliticsĀ reported,Ā theĀ claim was thatĀ stateĀ financial disclosures showĀ Dunn owingĀ more than his net worth.
Dunnās campaign also says that assertion isĀ false.
Reichelderfer points toĀ Form 1 Statement of Financial Disclosure, required by the state of Florida as part of DunnāsĀ nomination to the Enterprise Florida post.Ā Form 1, which asks for sources of income, does notĀ specifyĀ any dollar figures, net worth or outstanding loan balances.
Reichelderfer says theseĀ accusations are simplyĀ mudslingingĀ against a fellow Republican, and is unfortunate so early in the campaign.
If Dunnās GOP opponentsĀ are going to attack, he said, they had ābetter get (their) facts straight.ā
