NY Post: Michael Bloomberg & Jeb Bush’s bromance

Insiders are buzzing over the intense mutual admiration society that has formed between Mayor Bloomberg and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and wondering what the two are planning for the future.

“There’s something going on there,” said one City Hall veteran. “This is a lot more than, they’re on the same side when it comes to education.”

The conservative Bush and the moderate ex-Republican mayor have hit it off.

Bloomberg appointed Bush to the board of his foundation and has gone hundreds of miles out of his way to appear on the same stage. He has repeatedly lauded Bush for taking the lead in education reforms, a favor always returned by the former governor.

Last March, the mayor hopped on his private jet for a late-night trip to Tampa so he could make it to an early-morning MSNBC panel discussion with Bush and Rev. Al Sharpton on school issues.

“The relationship is real and genuine,” said one source. “They talk somewhat regularly.”

Although the Bush name remains toxic on the national political scene, Jeb — brother of former President George W. Bush — has been mentioned as a possible presidential contender in 2012 or 2016.

I don’t rule out the possibility,” said longtime political consultant Joe Mercurio. “He’s a lot more impressive than his brother.”

That raises the question of what role Bloomberg might play.
