O-M-G: Former Speaker Johnnie Byrd running for Circuit Court judge in Hillsborough

Working on a story about the worst legislative leaders of all-time, I naturally googled “Johnnie Byrd” and much to my everlasting regret I discovered this.

The worst Speaker of the Florida House EVER now wants to be a hangin’ judge.

If the world ran out of law students, I still would not vote for Johnnie Byrd for judge.

In case anyone forgets how horrible it was under Johnnie Byrd, re-read Lucy Morgan’s column in the aftermath of the 2004 legislation session:

“Throughout the Capitol, lobbyists and legislators – almost everyone participating in the process – uniformly condemned House Speaker Johnnie Byrd as the worst speaker ever.

Some of the worst criticism came from Republicans who worked hard to build a GOP majority in Florida.

…Curt Kiser, a lobbyist who also served in the House and Senate when Republicans were a minority, said the level of vindictiveness in the House “is probably the worst I’ve ever seen.”

Yeah, a guy like that is exactly who you want to be a fair and impartial judge.

Fortunately, Byrd is running against an incumbent, Mark Wolfe. Something tells me Judge Wolfe will be receiving several checks from a lot of people he’s never met. Why would they contribute?

Because they’ve met Johnnie Byrd.
