Online news service the Florida Current has quite the trophy kill from Rick Scott's administration to display

Department of Economic Opportunity Hunting F. Deutsch tendered his resignation Tuesday — effective Dec. 14 — a month after it was revealed that he received unemployment compensation benefits from 2009 to 2011 after he lost his job as a bank executive.

The irony here is that Scott’s DEO is the state agency responsible for administering what critics call the stingiest jobless benefits system in the country.

News that Deutsch has resigned gives the Florida Current, an online news service provided by the owners of LobbyTools, and its reporter Gray Rohrer quite the trophy kill to display.

And display it they should because it took some time before the rest of the Capitol Press Corp. caught up with the story. That’s because, often times, if a statewide story is not first reported by the Times/Herald juggernaut, it’s almost as if it did not happen.

Scooping the traditional media on this story is yet another indication that Florida politics does have a healthy online news community.
